The Storyglass

Manuscript Assessment

A looking glass into the heart of your story

for writers with a finished manuscript

4-6 week turnaround

$2000 up to 90k words

You’ve carried your story far—now it’s time to hold it up to the light and see it clearly. I’ll study your story as a whole, tracing the threads of structure, plot, pacing, character, setting, and more–to reveal both its strengths and the places that need refining. The Storyglass offers reflection and revelation, giving you the insight and direction you need for the next stage of revision.

Note that a manuscript assessment is NOT a developmental edit–I’ll provide feedback and a plan, but won’t work alongside you to reshape the manuscript.

Who's this for?

    • You have an early draft and aren’t sure where to spend your time and energy revising.
    • You’re overwhelmed by craft advice and unsure what will truly improve your story.
    • You’ve been in the revision trenches a while but something still feels off.
    • Beta reader feedback has been vague, surface-level, or contradictory.
    • Your writing group loves sections, but you want expert insight on the novel as a whole.

What’s included?

    • Editorial letter (up to 10 pages) with detailed notes on the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript and suggested next steps.
    • In-line comments on your first 50 pages.
    • 60-minute coaching call to review feedback and map out next steps.
    • Unlimited email support for 30 days after our coaching call.

The Mini-Storyglass

Assessment of your first 50 pages

Shine a light on your opening pages to gain clarity and confidence

for writers with a finished manuscript

2 week turnaround

$350

For writers looking for a budget-friendly alternative to a full manuscript assessment. The opening chapters can reveal both the strengths of your story and issues that may be reflected throughout the rest of the draft. I’ll review the big picture elements of your story and reveal both its strengths and the places that need refining. You’ll gain practical fixes you can carry through your entire manuscript.

Who's this for?

    • You have a solid grasp of craft but seek the confidence of an expert eye on your work.
    • You’re eager for professional, honest feedback but not ready for a full package or full assessment.
    • You’re preparing to query agents or enter contests and want to be sure your pages are spinning the magic you hope they are.

What’s included?

    • Editorial letter (up to 5 pages) with detailed big-picture feedback on strengths and weaknesses and suggested next steps.
    • In-line comments on your first 50 pages.
    • 60-minute coaching call to review feedback and map out next steps.
    • Unlimited email support for 30 days after our coaching call.

What my clients say

“I enjoyed working with Natalie so much. Her feedback on my manuscript was insightful, direct, and reasonable. She saw things I had totally overlooked, and she gave me concrete suggestions on how to improve my story. I was impressed with her knowledge in so many aspects of writing craft and the publishing process. I highly recommend her to anyone who needs a thoughtful, expert review and a collaborative partner.” ~ Jackie Alcalde Marr

“Working with Natalie has been an absolute pleasure. Her attentive and thorough reading of my manuscript gave me valuable insights I was able to use to fine-tune my story to its best version of itself. Natalie’s feedback revealed blind spots I couldn’t have picked up on my own since after eight or nine drafts, I was too close to it. She gave suggestions on how to improve some of the weaker elements and celebrated the stronger points to help me see what was working versus what wasn’t. Natalie’s thoughtfulness, combined with her keen eye for detail, makes her skilled at giving constructive feedback while providing the support and encouragement every writer needs!"

-Mona B

"I was so fortunate to have the chance to receive Natalie’s feedback on my manuscript. Not only did she help me see and understand where my story was lacking, she offered targeted suggestions to strengthen the storyline, heighten the stakes, and adjust my scenes so each one both immersed the reader in the setting and characters and advanced the story’s overall forward momentum. Natalie offered helpful resources, her own guidance and expertise, and a prioritized, manageable list of suggestions for my revision. I can’t emphasize enough how professional, compassionate, and perceptive Natalie’s notes were–I would love to work with her again and highly recommend her book coaching services!"
